Don’t forget to tell your doctor!
If you are taking fitness classes, make sure you contact your doctor or let them know on your next visit. It is important that your doctors know about all treatments you are involved in, so that they can balance their treatments with all of your extra activities.

These are a few of the fitness classes offered throughout the year at MMC's Wellness Center

Tai chi (pronounced "tie chee") is a mind-body practice that originated in China as a martial art. A person doing tai chi moves his body slowly and gently, while breathing deeply and meditating (tai chi is sometimes called "moving meditation"). Many practitioners believe that tai chi helps the flow throughout the body of a proposed vital energy called qi (pronounced "chee," it means "air" or "power"). In tai chi practice, it is considered important to concentrate; put aside distracting thoughts; and breathe in a deep, relaxed, and focused manner. Practitioners believe that this breathing and meditation have many benefits, such as:

  • Massaging the internal organs.
  • Aiding the exchange of gases in the lungs.
  • Helping the digestive system work better.
  • Increasing calmness and awareness.
  • Improving balance.

Our popular Balance Class focuses on improving balance, gait and posture. Students learn exercises that they can practive on their own at home. Exercises are designed to improve the ability to ward off gravity in any position. The result is an improvement in the ability to balance and to feel more confident in daily activities.
