These are a few of the fitness classes offered throughout the year at MMC's Wellness Center

Tai chi (pronounced "tie chee") is a mind-body practice that originated in China as a martial art. A person doing tai chi moves his body slowly and gently, while breathing deeply and meditating (tai chi is sometimes called "moving meditation"). Many practitioners believe that tai chi helps the flow throughout the body of a proposed vital energy called qi (pronounced "chee," it means "air" or "power"). In tai chi practice, it is considered important to concentrate; put aside distracting thoughts; and breathe in a deep, relaxed, and focused manner. Practitioners believe that this breathing and meditation have many benefits, such as:

  • Massaging the internal organs.
  • Aiding the exchange of gases in the lungs.
  • Helping the digestive system work better.
  • Increasing calmness and awareness.
  • Improving balance.

Our popular Balance Class focuses on improving balance, gait and posture. Students learn exercises that they can practive on their own at home. Exercises are designed to improve the ability to ward off gravity in any position. The result is an improvement in the ability to balance and to feel more confident in daily activities.

“Betsy’s Body Friendly Yoga,” taught by Betsy Gustafson.
Betsy is also well-known in the community for teaching exercise classes for over 25 years. Betsy is a certified group exercise instructor, yoga and Pilates instructor and certified personal trainer. She is also a senior exercise specialist. Betsy enjoys helping people feel and move better and be healthier. If you’re new to yoga, or have been scared to try it, this class is for you. The class is called “Betsy’s Body Friendly Yoga” because participants can be brand new to yoga or have previous experience. Betsy encourages your body to improve from its current capability to a better level. The class is held on Mondays 2-3 p.m. and includes standing poses, seated poses, and may include the use of chairs to assist with the poses. Classes end with a relaxation segment to leave participants feeling renewed and refreshed.
