 As we continue to deal with the budget cuts from the state government, we are finding new ways to raise money to compensate for the $30,000 cut in funding we received.Of course our biggest fundraiser is our annual “A Fabulous Affair” which will be held on Sept. 26. In addition to a great meal of filet mignon and crab imperial, guests enjoy the music of the Fabulous Greaseband and can bid on items in our silent and live auctions. We are still looking for items for the silent auction. If you have any suggestions, please let me know. Tickets are on sale now at Member Services and this event is always a sell-out so don’t wait too long to get yours. Cost is $60 per person. Thank you to those sponsors that have already signed on: Presenting Sponsors ($5K) are Dove View Apartments, Smith Holden & Associates, and an anonymous friend of MMC; Platinum sponsor ($2,500) Mitten Construction; Gold sponsors - Dover Audi-Volkswagen-Subaru and George & Lynch; Silver sponsors - Conner-Strong Insurance, List Refrigeration, Dottie May, Sam’s Club, and Carolyn Fredricks. Another fundraiser in September is our first Indoor Community Yard Sale and BBQ on Sept. 20. Be sure to reserve a table for $15 and clean out those garages and attics. Turn that trash into cash and support the Modern Maturity Center. Tables will be set up in the East Wing ballrooms, so you don’t have to worry about the weather. Also, our executive chef, Victor Hendricks will be cooking his famous smoked ribs and chicken for sale. Watch for more details. I know it is only August, but make your plans now to spend New Year’s Eve here at MMC. We are planning a great celebration - come dine, dance and toast the New Year at our first New Year’s Eve Party. We will begin selling tickets in October. We did receive good news on the funding front. Meals on Wheels of Delaware has announced they will pick up the portion of the budget cuts that cover volunteer mileage. We are very thankful for their support. Our volunteers are dedicated, but the gas crunch has been straining their budgets as well. The support from MOWD shows our volunteers how much they are valued and appreciated. We will continue to look at other fundraising sources. If you have some “fun”draising ideas, stop by and talk to me about them. Lastly, we still have a month or so of hot weather to go. Remind your friends and neighbors that the MMC is a convenient cooling center. Even though we have adjusted our thermostats to save money, it is still a safe place to come and stay cool if you or someone you know does not have air conditioning or fans to alleviate the heat. Be sure to check on elderly friends and neighbors during heat waves to ensure they are staying cool. I hope you enjoy the rest of your summer!
