Normally February is a very boring, snowy month, but we have many exciting things happening here at MMC this month.
First I want to officially welcome all of our new Board Members - Daniel Simpson, Cathy Nacrelli and Nancy Wagner - and congratulations to our newly elected officers - President Joyce Breasure-Herrick, 1st Vice President Diane Street, 2nd Vice President Glynis Gibson, Secretary Bill Holmes, and Treasurer Ned Brown. Thank you to all of our Board members who have volunteered their service to the Modern Maturity Center. I look forward to working with you in the coming year.
I am also excited about a recent bill passed by the Delaware House of Representatives to establish an Senior Trust Fund. The proposed Trust Fund will be used for new or expanded programs for older adults throughout the state and be funded by fines on those who commit crimes against seniors. The bill now goes before the State Senate.
Another long awaited development is the renewed building on the adjacent apartments. A developer has purchased the property and they expect the first block of apartments to be open by early summer.
I hope you have purchased your tickets for The Drifters dinner concert on Feb. 25. You won't want to miss this special event. We will be serving a delicious dinner in the East Wing, followed by the concert in the Longwood Room. Because the concert features auditorium seating on a first come-first serve basis, be sure to get your tickets soon. Tickets are just $48 per person for dinner and the show. Treat your Valentine with tickets to MMC's first ever dinner concert.
February is also African-American History Month. Our committee members have planned a celebration for Feb. 24. Plan to attend and check out the exhibits and special presentations during lunchtime in the Longwood Room. We are featuring a special menu as well.
Speaking of menus - I want to remind everyone about our snack bar. If you arrive early at the Center, stop by and see Craig Banks, our snack bar manager. He has a great selection of breakfast entrees and sandwiches. There are also some delicious lunch selections available until 1 p.m.
The weather has been kind to us so far, but winter is far from over. When bad weather occurs, be sure to call the Center - 302-734-1200- to be sure we are open before setting out. You can also check local radio stations WDSD, WDOV and Eagle 97 or TV stations WBOC and WMDT for closing announcements.
Lastly, I want to remind everyone again about parking in the correct direction - no pull through parking is permitted. We recently had another accident caused by someone who had pulled through a parking space and then hit another vehicle as they tried to exit. Please be considerate of others and watch your speed and park safely.
