Woodcarvers Connection

The MMC woodcarving club is looking for new members! If you are a woodcarving hobbyist and would like to share tips, ideas and camaraderie with other woodcarving enthusiasts than this club is for you. Meetings will be held on Thursdays from 10 a.m. to noon in Activity Room #1. Contact Amanda Lawrence at (302) 734-1200 ext. 129 to join the group. Once a group is formed the club will officially start. Have a special woodcarving talent you want to share with the group? Contact Amanda to set up a special technique demonstration for the club.

Twisted Stitchers

Looking for a fun activity that gives back to the community at the same time? The Twisted Stitchers are a charity knit and crochet group. They meet every Wednesday from 1 to 3 p.m. in Activity Room #8 to work and learn together. The group connects projects with various charities in the community including Bayhealth, The Veterans Home and Code Purple. You can receive volunteer hours for the work you do! This group is free to members of the MMC. If you wish to donate yarn for use by the group, please call Amanda Lawrence at 734-1200 ext. 129.

MMC Singles

Are you lonely? The MMC Singles group is a great way for you to get active and stay social. They meet once a month, on the first Wednesday of each month, to plan their “foodie” events. Then they meet at various restaurants around town for lunch. Newcomers are welcome to join any of those activities (schedule of events is listed in each Bulletin). NEW is a special “meet and greet” for newcomers. If this is your 1st thru 4th time with the group you are welcome to come and meet the group coordinator, Pat, and greet other newcomers. The first meeting is Wednesday, February 13 from 1 to 3 p.m. in the West Conference Room and the second Wednesdays of each month following. Drop in or call Pat at (302) 943-3137. No registration required. 

Book Club

Do you love to read? Have you been called a bookworm? Would you like to discuss your thoughts, reactions and opinions of books with other book lovers? If you answered “yes” to any of these then the MMC book club has a place for you! The next meetings are January 30 and February 27 from 1 to 2 in Activity Room #5. You can borrow the current book from Amanda Harris’ office #41 (while supplies last) or use your own. 

Harmonica Club

 The MMC harmonica group, Harps and Souls, perform for charity from fall to spring. If you are an MMC member and an experienced Harmonica player (able to play single notes) and would like to volunteer your time to perform for the community each month then this group is for you! The harmonica players practice every Monday from 1 to 2 p.m. in Activity Room #5. No sign up is necessary. 

Glee Club

Harmonize with us on the old songs you know and love. The Modern Melody Makers meet each Thursday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the MMC Longwood Room.
            Please note that the group begins at 10 on the second Thursday of each month for Birthday day and performs on-site at Daybreak on the third Thursday of each month instead of the dining room.
            Any MMC member who enjoys singing and music is invited to join this group at any time – including instrumentalists.

Meditation Group

Join other mindful MMC members for group meditation sessions once a week. The group meets on Wednesdays from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in Activity Room #7. This is a free opportunity for members of the MMC. Meditation helps with the challenges of life at any age. Gain peace of mind and wisdom in relationships including your relationship with yourself. There are opportunities for discussion and Q&A. This group is facilitated by Mona Kinnel.

Bible Study Groups

The MMC bible study options have grown! We now have three options of bible study groups to attend right here at MMC. All bible study groups are for  MMC members only. Stop in to meet the pastors and find the right study for you.
 
New! Meet Pastor Jason Spruill of Overflowing Life Church of Smyrna for his new bible study. The study meets on Mondays from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in Activity Room #3. The first meeting date in January 28 and every month thereafter. Sign up at Member Services so we know you are coming. Walk-ins are also welcome.
 
Bible study with Reverend Jerome Carey of Free Spirit Baptist began this past summer. Join his group on Wednesdays from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. in Activity Room #5. No registration required.
 
Bible study with Pastor Bob Phillips of First Baptist Church of Marydel has been at the MMC for over 5 years! They meet on Tuesdays from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in Activity Room #6/Chapel.   
 

Pump Up Your Brain

This exciting brain exercise is designed to keep older adult’s brains sharp and healthy. Participants engage in brain teasers, puzzles, and visual illusions. Take home hand-outs are available to exercise your brain at home! This group meets Fridays from 1 to 3 p.m. in Activity Room #1. There is a nominal printing fee charged in class to cover the cost of printing materials. Please note this class is designed for members who can engage in independent learning.

Quilters - Forrest Avenue Quilters

The Forrest Avenue Quilters meet at 9 a.m. to noon on Wednesday mornings in Activity Room #1. This is not a structured class but independent quilting with guidance. The Forrest Ave Quilters work on several charitable projects each year and also submit a group quilt to the Delaware State Fair.

Green Thumb Club

Spring is coming and the Green Thumb Garden Club begins meeting at the MMC for their annual gardening classes. Everyone who wants to learn more about gardening is invited. You don’t have to be an expert gardener to join. Classes meet Fridays, March 1 to May 25 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. in Activity Room #1. The cost is $10 for members for the entire session. Register at Member Services to reserve your seat in this class.
Classes include lessons on a variety of gardening topics from different speakers, a time for you to get your gardening questions answers and several field trips. In March, the topics start at the beginning with testing and improving your soil. The following week focuses on planning your garden and compost. Future sessions are on managing garden pests, early vegetables, when to plant, and what grows well.

Open Bereavement Support Group

Vitas offers a once a month, drop-in, support session. Drop in on the third Wednesday of the month from 1 to 2 p.m. in the Modern Maturity Center Activity Room #5 to talk to a trained bereavement specialist.  

Visually Impaired Support Group

Darryl Garner leads this monthly visually impaired support group meeting. Come out to the center on the third Tuesday of each month from 11:15 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in Activity Room #5. The meetings are free and no sign up is required.
