Oil Painting Art Class

Join artist/instructor Phyllis Shier at her twice monthly art classes focused on oils and featuring Bob Ross technique. She has taught art to both kids and adults in various venues. This class is a fun and relaxed learning experience for anyone no matter their skill level.  
 
Instructional classes meet from 10 a.m. to noon on Mondays, April 22 & 29 in Activity Room #8. The first class of each month begins new instruction on a specific painting. The second class of each month takes that same painting and helps it come alive as a finished piece. The cost is $7 a class for MMC members or purchase an art card for $35 for 6 classes. Non-members are $10 a class. Students must provide their own supplies and a suggested supply list is available at Member Services.

Intro to Jewelry Making

Join instructor Gilda Jennings at introduction to jewelry making. Have you ever wanted to create a unique piece of jewelry but felt intimated by the process? If so, this class is for you! Each class is taught at a beginner level. Gilda takes you through the process of creating a monthly project from start to finish and provides all supplies and tools needed. This is a great opportunity to learn a new skill, have fun with friends and create something special for yourself or a gift. 
 
The next classes are Wednesday, May 22 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in Activity Room #3. Each class is $17 for members and $25 for non-members. You must sign up at Member Services at least 24 hours in advance to reserve your spot. The May project is your choice of a bohemian style necklace or bracelet. 
 

Cell Phone Tutoring

Need to know how to operate your cell phone? Sign up for an appointment with our new cell phone guru, Chris. Half hour appointments are available on the second and fourth Mondays of each month from 12-2.  Appointments are held in Activity Room #6/Chapel. Sign up at Member Services to reserve your spot.
  • Chris can help with the following on an iPhone: contacts, voicemail, email, text messaging, facetime, pictures, user settings such as background, ringtones, passcodes and volume, apps, connecting to wifi, software updates and other everyday cell phone uses.
  •  Chris can help with basics only with other brands of smartphones such as text messaging, contacts, voicemail etc.
  •  Things Chris cannot help you with: flip phones, setting up a cell phone account/contract, contacting your cell phone provider, reading, understanding or helping set up payment for cell phone bills or contracts, repairing broken cell phones or helping you choose a cell phone plan.

Computer Tutoring

Our computer tutor, Karen, teaches the basics (what type of computer to purchase, general orientation, internet use, antivirus), communication programs (email, Skype, Facebook) and she can even help you set up and operate an Ebay or Craigslist account. Computer tutoring appointments are $5 an hour for members or $25 an hour for non-members. New appointment days are Tuesdays and Wednesdays between 10:45 a.m. and 3 p.m. See a Member Services representative to sign up for a time slot as spots fill quickly.

Conversational Italian

The class for the semester is full. A new class session will begin in the fall. 

Learn to Knit

Joyce Vasikonis offers a basic Beginner and specialized knitting classes. Classes are $6 an hour. Call Joyce at 302-222-6721 to schedule.

Card Making

Instructor Diana Carter of Anacar Creations teaches card making at the MMC. She offers an all skill level card making class. No experience necessary! The next classes are Tuesdays, April 23 & 30 from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. in Activity Room #1. The cost per class is $7 for members and $12 for non-members. Supplies are provided to create three cards per class. Students need to bring their own scissors, tape runner and notepad for notes. Registration for this class ends the day before so be sure to sign up atleast 24hrs in advance.  

Book Club

Do you love to read? Have you been called a bookworm? Would you like to discuss your thoughts, reactions and opinions of books with other book lovers? If you answered “yes” to any of these then the MMC book club has a place for you! The next meeting is April 24 from 1 to 2 in Activity Room #5. You can borrow a book from Amanda Harris’ office #41 (while supplies last) or use your own. 

Bible Study

The MMC bible study options have grown! We now have three options of bible study groups to attend right here at MMC. All bible study groups are for MMC members only. Stop in to meet the pastors and find the right study for you.
 
New! Meet Pastor Jason Spruill of Overflowing Life Church of Smyrna for his new bible study. The study is on Mondays from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in Activity Room #3. 
 
Bible study with Reverend Jerome Carey of Free Spirit Baptist began this past summer. Join his group on Wednesdays from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. in Activity Room #5.
 
Bible study with Pastor Bob Phillips of First Baptist Church of Marydel has been at the MMC for over 5 years! They meet on Tuesdays from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in Activity Room #6/Chapel.   

Open Computer Lab

Stop in to the computer lab on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. to use the computers in the lab. Lab visitors are limited to 30 minute sessions when there is a wait for a computer. There is no fee to use the computers as long as you are an up to date member or caregiver. Membership IDs will be checked periodically to ensure members are up to date. The computer lab is made possible by the generous donations from UnitedHealthcare. 

Pump up your Brain

This exciting brain exercise is designed to keep older adult’s brains sharp and healthy. Participants engage in brain teasers, puzzles, and visual illusions. Take home hand-outs are available to exercise your brain at home! This group meets Fridays from 1 to 3 p.m. in Activity Room #1. There is a nominal printing fee charged in class to cover the cost of printing materials. Please note this class is designed for members who can engage in independent learning.

Five Wishes

 A Five Wishes workshop takes you and your loved ones through the process of deciding on your wishes for end of life care. This topic can be sensitive, confusing and sometimes difficult but Five Wishes is here to help you through it. The 5 topics that will be covered are “My wish for”: 
The person I want to make care decisions for me when I can’t. 
The kind of medical treatment I want or don’t want. 
How comfortable I want to be. 
How I want people to treat me. 
What I want my loved ones to know. 
With the help of the American Bar Association Commission on Legal Problems of the Elderly, Five Wishes meets the legal requirements under the health decisions statutes. This program is free to members of the MMC and $15 for non-members who want to attend. You must sign up at Member Services to reserve your spot in the workshop. The next workshop is Thursday, June 6  from 10 to 11 a.m. in Activity Room #5. 

CPR/First Aid

Knowing how to respond in an emergency is an excellent skill to have as a grandparent, volunteer, friend and citizen.  Educate yourself so you can respond quickly and accurately in the event of an emergency. Accredited Community Education L.L.C. offers a CPR/First Aid/AED certification class at the MMC on Monday, May 6 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Activity Room 8. The course costs $50 for MMC members and $65 for non-members. Sign up at Member Services soon as spots fill quickly and are limited. Don’t let your physical capabilities be a barrier in taking the class. Accommodations can be made for those who cannot get down to the floor. You never know when an emergency will arise. Prepare yourself today.

Acrylic Workshop

Retirement Planning Workshop

Poole Locke Associates LLC offer this free retirement planning workshop for MMC members. Topics include IRA management, Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) requirements, Social Security, Long Term Care, cash management, income investments. The presentation is followed by Q&A. The workshop is held on Thursday, April 11 and May 9 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in Activity Room #5.

The current sign language class is already in session. Check back in the fall for a new class session.

Essential Oils with Tea Tree

Join Jowana Lamb, C.A. a certified aromatherapist and member of the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy for a special class on the uses for Tea Tree oil. This class meets Thursday, April 11 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in Activity Room #3. Discover the history and uses for tea tree oil which has been used in traditional medicine for years. Featured oils in addition to tea tree include bergamot, mint, clove bud and frankincense. Students create a Tea Tree oil blend in class to take home. The cost is $12 for members and $20 for non-members and includes all supplies. Register at Member Services as space is limited. Mark your calendars, the next essential oil classes are May 9 (introduction to essential oils) and May 30 (oils for depression and anxiety). 
 

Selling Your Home for Seniors

Thinking about selling your home? Spring is the time to list! Join Bob Sacra, a local Remaxx Real Estate Agent, on Thursday, April 18  from 1 to 3 p.m. in Activity Room 5. He offers information specifically designed for seniors looking to sell their home. Whether you are downsizing or relocating, the information he offers is essential to you. Learn home selling preparation, current market and interest rate conditions, how the internet effects home sales and discuss if this is a good time for you to sell. This event is free to MMC members. Sign up at Member Services to reserve your seat in the class.  

Living Well with a Chronic Condition

Do you have a chronic health condition, other than diabetes, and want to learn to manage your condition to live a better life? The Delaware Department of Health & Social Services bring to you this 6-week course on managing and living well with your chronic health condition. Learn techniques to better manage your health and build support with classmates. This course runs Fridays, March 29 to May 10 from 9:30 a.m. to noon in Activity Room #8 of the MMC. This free course is open to both members and non-members who have a chronic health condition other than diabetes. A special diabetes focused class is offered in September. Stem Cell Therapy Seminar

Kennedy Health Center offers an informational session on stem cell therapy as a way of pain management. Held Thursday, April 18, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in Activity Room #7. Learn how you can avoid surgery, eliminate pain medication and return to an active life. Great for people who suffer from osteoarthritis, knee/hip pain, shoulder pain, herniated discs, neck/back pain, chronic disease. Sign up at Member Services as seating is limited. 

Sound Meditation

Try something new at the MMC. Join Mary Lampert, a Certified Therapeutic Sound Practitioner, to practice sound meditation. Sound meditation is a passive activity where students can come and learn the power of sound to calm, relax and restore the body and mind. Mary guides you through meditation while providing live sound to bring your body back to balance and harmony. Benefits include a decrease in stress, anxiety and depression and improved sleep and focus. Come meet Mary and find out about sound meditation at her monthly class on Thursday, May 16 (off for April) from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in Activity Room #7. The cost is just $7 a class for members and $10 for non-members. Students must register and pay in advance at Member Services.

Elder Law Program

The Elder Law Program of the Delaware Community Legal Aid Society comes on-site to MMC once a month. Schedule a one-on-one appointment to draft powers of attorney and advance healthcare directives (not living wills). Appointments can be made for the second Wednesday of the month between 10:15 a.m. and 3:15 p.m. in Activity Room #6/chapel. Schedule a 45-minute appointment at Member Services by calling (302) 734-1200 ext. 167. Please note, all participants must be age 60 and over to qualify for this service.  

Introduction to Essential Oils

Join Jowana Lamb, C.A. a certified aromatherapist and member of the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy for a special introductory class to essential oils. This class meets Thursday, May 9 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in Activity Room #3. Learn the basics of essential oils including safety guidelines and the wide variety of uses. A notebook and supplies are included. Students create a toxic free hand soap in class to take home. The cost is $12 for members and $20 for non-members and includes all supplies. Register at Member Services as space is limited. 

Diabetes - What You Need to Know

Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield in partnership with the American Diabetes Association offers this class on what you need to know about diabetes. The class includes information on what is diabetes, its history and prevalence, prevention, risk factors, warning signs, stress reduction, nutrition, exercise, and self-care tips. The class is held on Tuesday, April 9 from 10 to 11 a.m. in Activity Room 1. This is a free class for MMC members but registration is required.

Cancer Screenings Class

Join Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield in partnership with the American Cancer Society at a class focused on cancer screenings. Learn about different cancer screenings and why they are important to your health, screening guidelines and how to talk to your doctor about getting screened. This class is held Tuesday, May 14 from 10 to 11 a.m. in Activity Room 1. This class is free for MMC members but registration is required.

Pain Management Course

Do live in chronic pain due to an illness or injury? The Delaware Department of Health & Social Services bring you this 6-week course on managing your pain. Learn techniques to better manage pain and emotional well-being.  This course runs Fridays, May 24 to June 28 from 9:30 a.m. to noon in Activity Room #8 of the MMC. This free course is open to both members and non-members. Pre-registration at MMC Member Services is required and class size is limited. Questions about class content?
