Book Club

Book Club is Back:  Do you love to read? Have you been called a bookworm? Would you like to discuss your thoughts, reactions and opinions of books with other book lovers? If you answered “yes” to any of these then the MMC book club has a place for you!  Meetings are held the last Thursday of the month from 12:00 p.m. until 1:00 p.m. in Activity Room #1.  The next scheduled meeting is Thursday October 28.  The book for October is "Fly Girls" by Sherri Smith.   Call Lori at 734-1200 ext 129 to obtain a copy of the book.  
 
 

Computer Tutoring

Computer Tutoring: Our computer tutor teaches the basics (what type of computer to purchase, general orientation, internet use, antivirus), communication programs (email, Skype, Facebook) and she can even help you set up and operate an eBay or Craigslist account. Computer tutoring appointments are $7 an hour for members or $25 an hour for non-members.   Tutoring is available on Tuesdays between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.and Thursdays between 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.  Contact Member Services to make an appointment.   Payment must be made in advance.   Refunds will not be issued with less than 24 hours cancellation notice

Open Computer Lab

Stop in to the computer lab on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. to use the computers in the lab. Lab visitors are limited to 30 minute sessions when there is a wait for a computer. There is no fee to use the computers as long as you are an up to date member or caregiver. Membership IDs will be checked periodically to ensure members are up to date. The computer lab is made possible by the generous donations from UnitedHealthcare. 

Pump up your Brain

This exciting brain exercise is designed to keep older adult’s brains sharp and healthy. Participants engage in brain teasers, puzzles, and visual illusions. Take home hand-outs are available to exercise your brain at home! This group meets Fridays from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in Activity Room #1.   FREE TO MMC MEMBERS. 
There is a nominal printing fee charged in class to cover the cost of printing materials. Please note this class is designed for members who can engage in independent learning.

Conversational Italian

Conversational Italian Class -   Learn the basics of Italian and get to know other Italian enthusiasts at the MMC. Giuliano “G” Gregoretti teaches this fun and free class on conversational Italian. Classes are free for MMC members and are held on Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to noon.in Activity Room #7.   Registration is not required.   

All Art Tuesdays

Join artist/instructor Phyllis Shier at her bi-weekly art classes focused on oils and featuring wet on wet technique.   Acrylic painters welcome.  Phyllis has taught art to all ages in various venues.  This class is fun and relaxed. Beginners welcome!  Classes are held the second and fourth Tuesday of the month from 10 a.m. to noon in Activity Room #1.  The next class will be held on Tuesday October 26.  Learn a new painting the first week of the month.  The first class of the month begins new instruction on a specific painting. The second class takes that same painting and helps it come alive as a finished piece.  The cost is $10 per class for MMC members or purchase an art card for $60 for 6 classes. The cost for non-members is $15 per class.   Students must provide their own supplies.  You can find the suggested supply list below and it is also available at Member Services.  Class size is limited to 6 students.  Sign up at Member Services.

1" brush
Filbert Brush
Script liner brush
Palette knife
Palette or foam plate
Baby oil or turpentine 
Paper towels
Canvas no larger than 16x20
Oil Paints - Titanium white, Phthalo blue, Alizarin crimson, Cadmium yellow, Indian yellow, Black, Dark Sienna, Van Dyke Brown, Sap Green, Yellow Ochre
 
For the November painting, Snow Birch, you'll need the following supplies:
Black canvas[ not more than 16x20]
2inch oil paint brush
#6 oil paint fan brush
#2 script liner brush
Small foam brush
Titanium White
Phthalo Blue
Prussian Blue Indian yellow
We will be using White Gesso ,Black gesso and gray gesso but it will be available in class
 
 

Come and Weave a Holiday Basket with Susan Freese

Susan will teach you how to handmake a holiday basket.  The class will be held on Monday December 6 in Activity Room #1 from 8:30 to 1:00 p.m. The cost is $20 (which includes instruction and materials).  Class is limited to 6 students.  Register at Member Services and pick up the supply list.  Advance payment is required.  Refunds will not be issued with less than 24-hour cancellation notice.
 

Green Thumb Club is back in 2022.

The Green Thumb Garaden Club will resume meeting on Fridays in 2022 beginning on Friday February 25 until Friday May 20, 2022 from 9:30 am. until 11:30 am. in  AR #1.   For more information contact Cheryl Fisher, the program coordinator at  301-332-3715.

The MMC bible study options have grown! We now have three options of bible study groups to attend right here at MMC. All bible study groups are for MMC members only. Stop in to meet the pastors and find the right study for you.
 
Bible study with Reverend Jerome Carey of Free Spirit Baptist is held  Wednesdays from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.
 
Bible study with Pastor Bob Phillips of First Baptist Church of Marydel meets on Tuesdays from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. 
 
Deacon Vince Pisano will be back on  February 19 for Catholic Bible study every Wednesday at 9:00 a.m.

Elder Law Program

The Elder Law Program of the Delaware Community Legal Aid Society comes on-site to MMC once a month. Schedule a one-on-one appointment to draft powers of attorney and advance healthcare directives (not living wills). Appointments can be made for the second Wednesday of the month between 10:15 a.m. and 3:15 p.m. in Activity Room #6/chapel. Schedule a 45-minute appointment at Member Services by calling (302) 734-1200 ext. 167. Please note, all participants must be age 60 and over to qualify for this service.
